Into the cool air after breakfast for about 8am, into the valley around an hour and half later. There was a mist in the valley that was later suggested to us, was dust and smoke from the state fires but it didn't smell of smoke. Another helpful ranger suggested Vernal falls as a walk, so off we set. Even though we were early there were lots of school parties on the walk which must have been camping. The higher we went the more spectacular and on reaching the falls we decided to make camp and have our picnic. We took an alternate root back missing the steppest steps but slightly longer. Lots of squirrels, ground squirrels, blue jays, mule deer, the ground squirrels shout if you approach and Nicki managed to get within a foot of one to take its photo. We even saw a squirrel being taken up the hillside in the mouth of a bobcat, wow.
After the compulsory coffee and cake we were entertained by a excellent lady botanist for an hour, very inspiring.
The weather has been absolutely perfect, cooling off as we made home stopping for a big burger on the way, back for 8pm.
For some reason after taking there photo for them, the chap gave me a old American dollar, everyone's so friendly.
